War in Ukraine: Russia bans 100 Canadians including actor Jim Carrey
Eva Deschamps / November 15, 2022
Russia announced on Monday that it was banning 100 Canadians, including actor Jim Carrey and journalists, from entering its territory in response to the Canadian sanctions that targeted Russian journalists and actors in October.
The decision was made in response to “the practice of the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s regime’s implementation of sanctions against Russia’s leaders, its politicians, parliamentarians (…), journalists and cultural figures,” the Russian Foreign Ministry explained in a statement.
Among those banned from entering Russia is 60-year-old actor and comedian Jim Carrey.
Also on the list, along with the Hollywood star, are journalists Paul Workman of CTV and Margaret Evans of the CBC, Caroline Xavier, the head of the Communications Security Establishment, as well as several Canadian figures of Ukrainian origin.
Moscow accuses them of “direct involvement in the formation of an aggressive anti-Russian policy,” according to the statement.
Since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1,400 individuals and entities in or from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
In October, Canada imposed sanctions on Russian journalists and media as well as actors deemed “complicit in disinformation” about the conflict in Ukraine.
