Australian police said on Thursday that they had found the remains of a 12-year-old girl “attacked by a crocodile” while swimming near a remote community in northern Australia.

After searching the site, police said they had found remains they “believe to be those of a missing 12-year-old child”. “This is devastating news for the family, the community and everyone involved in the search,” added Major Erica Gibson of the Northern Territory Police.

The teenager had disappeared on Tuesday evening after swimming at Mango Creek, near Palumpa, a small Aboriginal community around seven hours’ drive south-west of Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory.

“Initial reports indicated that the child had been attacked by a crocodile,” according to a statement from the Northern Territory police.

Crocodile attacks are rare but not unheard of in this rural state in northern Australia. A 4.5-metre crocodile was shot dead after stalking residents near Palumpa in 2013. In 2017, a 54-year-old man was also the victim of a non-fatal attack in the same area.

In mid-June, a 3.60-meter-long saltwater crocodile that had been terrorizing an Aboriginal community in northern Australia by attacking residents and devouring dogs, was itself eaten at a traditional feast, after being shot dead by police.

The teacher, a woman in her forties, confessed to the crime after police discovered her and the little girl with stab wounds at an elementary school in the central city of Daejeon on Monday evening, according to Yonhap.
The girl was taken unconscious to hospital, where she died of her injuries, the same source said. The teacher had stab wounds to the back of her neck and one arm, which were probably self-inflicted, according to the news agency. “Police discovered that the teacher had taken a leave of absence for depression and returned to school at the end of the year,” Yonhap explains.
The victim had remained at school for after-school study and was then due to attend a private art class. The girl’s parents, learning that she was absent from the art class, had called the police. The teacher underwent surgery for her injuries, and police said she would resume questioning later.
South Korea is generally a very safe country, with a homicide rate of 1.3 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021, according to official statistics. The world average is 6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Nevertheless, the country saw a series of high-profile violent crimes in 2023, including several knife attacks.

A truck and its driver have been missing “for 24 hours” in a giant hole in the street in Tokyo., Magnate Daily

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Yashio (north of Tokyo) when a gaping hole six meters deep and ten meters wide formed in the roadway, sweeping away the vehicle and its driver.

“Rescue operations have been continuing for 24 hours, but we have no contact with the driver,” a fire department spokesman said on Wednesday morning.

At the start of the night, a second chasm formed just a few meters from the first, right in the middle of a crossroads, just as rescue workers were extracting the truck body from the first hole, separated from the cab still underground.

The fire department spokesman said that local residents had been evacuated within a 200-meter radius.

The driver had been able to communicate with rescuers until early afternoon on Tuesday, but the rescuers had to move away due to the instability of the area, another fire department spokesman told AFP.
